The Word Natural On A Label

What it is required to mean, what it is usually taken to mean, and the gap in between.

A natural ingredients badge appears on the GlycoAid packaging, as it does on most of this aisle. It is worth knowing exactly how much that word is carrying.

What it actually indicates. Origin. The material started in a plant, a mineral or an animal rather than being built from scratch in a reactor. That is a description of where something came from, and it is true of everything on this panel.

What it does not indicate. Safety, potency, purity, or that the ingredient is in the same state it was in the plant. Extraction, concentration and standardisation all happen between the field and the capsule, and all of them are normal and none of them is disqualified by the word natural.

The example that settles it. Licorice root is entirely natural. It is also the one item on this panel with a documented ceiling, because glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and lower potassium at sustained intakes. Natural and harmless are different words, and the first does not imply the second.

Where the word is genuinely useful. Alongside the other marks on this bottle it does narrow things: vegetarian tells you the shell is vegetable cellulose rather than gelatin, gluten free and dairy free are allergen statements with real definitions behind them, and non-GMO is a sourcing claim. Those are checkable in a way that natural on its own is not.

How to read a badge row. Ask what each mark would have to be false about. Made in the USA is falsifiable. GMP standard is falsifiable. Natural is very nearly not, which is why it appears on almost everything and tells you almost nothing on its own.
